re: origins of DHCP I'd like to think that X terminals had such a strong influence as to create DHCP. Not so. I believe the real driving impetus was portables. People kept dragging laptops around and wanted to plug them into nets. You have this whole issue of IP devices that 'wander' in and out of the net, combined with the problem of having more devices than IP addresses. DHCP tries to deal with this by having automatically generated 'shared' addresses. Conceptually a great thing, although a potentially horrid management nightmare. I've run into sys admins who refuse to use it since you can run into situations where a flakey device wreaks havoc on the net, and it is virtually impossible to find it since it doesn't really exist in your network map :).
