I have long admired the way in which as soon as the Italians realized that --in Galileo-- they had created a martyr to science, they began to treat him in the conventional way. When his remains were disinterred and reburied, a finger was removed, the bones of which can be admirted under a glass globe in the Museum of the History of Science in Florence, much like the relics of any other martyr.
