Networking & Communications Products -- During the quarter, Intel introduced two key networking solutions, the Intel Express(TM) 8100 Router and the Express 130T Standalone Hub. These two products add to Intel's lineup of networking solutions designed to help companies create simple and affordable branch office networks. -- Intel announced its first stackable, scalable, layer 3 switches designed to provide more comprehensive solutions for campus networking environments. -- Intel announced two additions to its server adapter family, the EtherExpress(TM) PRO/100+ and the EtherExpress PRO/100 Intelligent Server Adapter, providing cost-effective network connections for workgroup and high-performance Web servers. -- The company announced Intel AnswerExpress(SM) Support Suite, an Internet-based service delivering comprehensive PC help, support and protection to home and small business users. Computer Enhancement Products -- Intel announced the i960(R)JT processor, a higher-performance version of the i960 series of embedded 32-bit RISC processors. The i960JT processor is targeted for markets such as inkjet printers, networking equipment, remote access equipment and ADSL modems. -- Polaroid announced plans to introduce a portable digital PC camera in the second half of 1998 based on Intel's portable PC camera kit reference design. By utilizing Intel's 971 PC Camera Kit, Polaroid expects to offer a digital camera, ideal for those individuals who want easy display and exchange of images on PCs rather than hard-copy prints. Corporate Strategic Investments -- During the quarter, Intel closed approximately 20 new equity investments totaling approximately $90 million, and also completed the acquisition of Chips and Technologies, Inc. Some of the areas the company invested in during the quarter included enhancement of the PC for visual computing applications, the creation of new content for the Internet, and advancement of residential broadband connectivity for PCs. These investments were made with the intent of expanding the computing industry and enhancing Intel's business capabilities.
