Personally, I think there are more reasons that one might wish to be in America than seeking wealth or consuming more stuff. Several Germans and Scandinavians live in my neighborhood, because, they say, they feel more free here. Intellectually, socially et cetera. Freedom to pursue one's potential to a greater degree than elsewhere. America represents more than manna. Freedom, the diversity, better opportunities for the kids, health care, safety and security, the climate, the gorgeous geography, prettier women (just an opinion (and not even mine)) - whatever. Lots of reasons to be here and not in India. And vice versa. Second, Mr. Ramesh's point, with which I concur, is that much of the American economy seems weirdly artificial. I mean if we all just cooked our own meals and took care of our own kids the GNP would decline by ____%. If I get cancer, the GNP rises, and all that. It is weird and doesn't seem terribly sound, and everyone's rushing around faster and faster just so as not to fall behind, and now the husband and the wife are making money which is great as far as opportunity but they're really stressed out, trying to stay ahead of the credit card companies which keep sending offers in the mail and they're not happy because any quality time they would have had is spent at Home Depot getting exhausted and since when is it that everyone wants to work so hard and wouldn't it be great if they could both stay home with the kids relaxing (to the extent the kids allow) in an un-Martha Stewart home which is what my wife and I do but then, we're nuts - and lucky as hell. And she subscribes to Martha Stewart!! peter
