Intel reduces capital spending, cuts 3,000 Jobs
SAN FRANCISCO, April 14 (Reuters) - Intel Corp chief
financial officer Andy Bryant said the semiconductor giant
moved too fast to add employees and on capital spending and was
taking action to cut back. "We got ahead of ourselves in
adding heads and in cap spending," Bryant told analysts on a
conference call.
"What we are trying to do is take a breath and let the
business grow back up."
Intel plans to reduce its head count over the next six
months by 3,000 people, mostly through attrition.
Intel said in its news release that capital spending for
1998 will be $5 billion, less than prior guidance of $5.3
billion.

Shahen, >>"Celeron is not going to be a disaster. Even if it disappoints then Mendocino will back it up.
Together, they are quite a threat to the competition at the low end."<<

Actually, both Covington (out tomorrow) and Mendocino have been announced as members of the Celeron family.

You are right in saying 'Besides, Intel's mix of
products are too diverse for any one to cause "disaster" for the company.'

Gotta wonder if the "Intel is doomed" faction really believe what they are saying, over and over, or is it because they are stuck with AMD stock?

I guess I meant disaster for a product line rather than the rest of the business. Mendecino is going to be facing k6-3d chips.
