SAP certainly does not lack competitions. One strong contender is JD Edwards. Following excerpt is from Forbes Mag dated 4-8-98:

In 1996 J.D. Edwards finally
released a client/server product.
And a splendid product it is.
Customers like Gateway 2000, Mobil
Oil in Singapore and Olympus America
tell FORBES that J.D. Edwards'
software is simpler to implement
than any other enterprise resource
planning software they have
evaluated. The J.D. Edwards product
can run on the AS/400 system and on
Unix and Windows NT servers-good for
customers making a slow transition.
J.D. Edwards' software has an edge
over competitors' products. Its
software is written especially for
networks and for companies whose
software must constantly adapt to
new procedures (see box).

IBM loves what J.D. Edwards did. The
computer giant wants to get as much
mileage as possible out of its
venerable AS/400, which, at the ripe
age of 9, is still growing in unit
sales. It will provide a nice income
stream while J.D. Edwards takes on
SAP in a much bigger market.

Sidebar: Adaptable Software

Currently PSFT, JDEC, BAANF, and SAP are all growing at blistering paces - due to huge and expanding market for their softwares. Who will eventually emerge as the MSFT of the enterprise application is still unknown. JDEC may be an interesting play due to its adaptable software structure.
