Wisam,

Electronic communication to the masses, as in forums such as these, can more aptly be compared with books and periodicals rather than private correspondence.

One point that has been made repeatedly in the online communities over the years is that online anyone can be a publisher, but there is no editor in the sense that books and periodicals have editors and/or fact-checkers. This state of affairs has had a markedly tonic effect on some egos.

I'm curious, do you ever get over to Usenet? Do you subscribe to any Internet listservs?

Holly

....recently on the Corel thread I was attacked by a person using a pseudonym for no apparent reason...

Ah, ha, Wisam, you have encountered the phenomenon I call "information highway road rage." On a highway, asphalt or electronic, people are anonymous, and permit themselves to vent the kind of hostility they would be reluctant (most of the time) to display in face-to-face encounters.

By the way, on S.I. posters on the $5 and under stock threads are most prone to road rage frenzies. Maybe that's because those stocks are particularly risky, to put it mildly. Corel falls into the $5 and under category, so, in future, beware! Or -- laugh at it all. Many of those road rage posts are absolutely hilarious (unintentionally, of course).
