Thomas, I think there is general agreement that infrequent spankings which are not cruelly inflicted probably do no real harm to children, as long as they are not babies or teenagers. The American Academy of Pediatrics, which had formerly been against all spanking, has had trouble constructing studies which would prove its former position, that all spanking was harmful.

However, the Academy, and most other child health professionals, consider spanking to be a last resort after time-outs, taking away privileges, natural consequences, etc., have been tried and have failed. I think a lot of people confuse using other methods of discipline with being overly permissive and just letting your children run wild. I think if more parents understood how to use other techniques effectively, there would be little need for spanking. But as long as the child is not really harmed, it is more of a personal parenting philosophy than anything else.

It certainly sounds like the sheer humiliation of a spanking was an effective enforcer of discipline in your family!!
