Earnings may fluctuate from quarter to quarter more precipitously than revenues. Charges for acquisitions and other extraordinary items against earnings may not always be bad - but much lower revenues is hardlly ever good - unless it is only a temporary event as when some hardnosed CEO stuffs the channels and creates havoc in the market place that takes several quarters to clear up.
