Intel closed down 1 1/8 at 74 7/8, brought lower by negative comments from Merrill Lynch's Thomas Kurlak. Kurlak lowered his 1998 earnings estimates and expects Intel's price to drop to $60 a share in the next six months. Kurlak cited Intel's shrinking gross margin as the ramp-up of the Pentium II has not motivated growth as expected. Kurlak doesn't expect Intel will shift to a higher-margin product mix amid lower PC prices and higher manufacturing costs.
