>>it doesn't look like wireless real time data is available in Los Angeles.<<

Wireless data is available in the Los Angeles area via DBC Signal using an FM frequency.
dbc.com

The Internet connection is what seems to be among the missing. Some of the PCS cellular outfits have indicated intentions but I have not seen and end product yet. (Pacbell indicated this once but I have not seen the implementation)

It looks like your best solution for now is using the laptop for receiving data via FM and the cell phone to call a broker.

I will defer to someone else on laptop recommendations. I tried portable computing five years ago. I know they have improved a lot since then but I still see the same draw backs. The $ ratio is still about two to one. You will pay twice as much for the same machine, laptop vs desktop. Batteries are still a problem. I finally ended up putting desktops everywhere I need a computer and carry the information with me on GB MO disks.

Of course, if you need portable computing there is no other choice.
