Christine, I don't disagree with much of what you have written here. The one thing that I would say is that on the whole, Christianity as practiced by man, has done more good than bad. America would probably not be the shining example to the rest of the world if not for Christianity. The philosophies of Christian principles are imbedded in our culture. I see this as a good thing. You seem to fear it, as a cause of something sinister about to happen. I'm not exactly sure why, maybe you have been watching too many late night evangelistic preachers or something. :-) About child rearing techniques with regard to spankings and whippings. Let me try and answer you this way. If I was a cop, and I just dropped off a 14 year old boy who stole a car, I would look the other way as I got back in my sedan if the father was whipping the tar out of him. Then if the boy called the police and reported his father for child abuse, showing me some belt welts on his back. I would look real hard and say...."Well son, Can't say as I see much of a welt there at all. Guess you better listen to your father next time huh?" Different scenario...let's say I'm a policeman and I have heard and been witness to two or three incidents of a father whipping his boy for no apparent reason. I would take him in and investigate him for child abuse. So, I guess what I'm getting at is it depends on the situation and past history. Unless of course we are talking about serious wounds like broken bones or deep lashes and such. I felt little or no sympathy for that teenager who was held in Singapore and lashed for breaking the law. It obviously works there to curb teenage violence. A few wacks on the back or butt is nothing to a normal healthy teenage boy. Shoot, most teenagers do more damage physically to themselves playing tackle football without pads on. I don't expect women to fully understand this :-) Michael
