News today about Visio (VSIO) that could affect Rational in the longer term:

"(Visio Corp. (Nasdaq: VSIO - news) today announced its receipt of two awards for its contribution to software and database design -- the Software Development - Jolt Productivity Award and the Visual Basic Programmers Journal (VBPJ) Reader's Choice Award. Visio(R) Professional 5.0 was chosen for its visual modeling capabilities as well as its ability to greatly enhance the productivity of software developers.
...
Visio Professional is a powerful visual modeling tool that can be used to help a team graphically depict a program's architecture throughout the development cycle. Visio Professional 5.0 supports the Unified Modeling Language (UML), the emerging standard for specifying, constructing, visualizing, and documenting the artifacts
of a software-intensive system, and includes the Microsoft Repository.
The incorporation of these technologies allows diagrams created in Visio Professional to be transformed into models exchanged with other development tools and shared with other people involved in the development of a system."

Visio Professional is not a CASE tool such as Rational Rose, it is a advanced and very good drawing tool. However, it only costs a couple of hundred dollars and the UML templates it has in it's latest version is very good. I definitely think that the low-end market for those wanting to start to do visual modeling will be very competitive and I'm a bit worried what Rational can do to avoid loosing that market completely.
