Oracle CEO Says NCI Unit to Supply Software for Cable Boxes

Redwood Shores, California, April 15 (Bloomberg) -- Oracle
Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Lawrence Ellison said the
company's Network Computer Inc. affiliate soon will announce an
agreement with a U.S. cable television company to supply software
for its next generation of digital set-top boxes.

Network Computer, a joint venture of Oracle and Netscape
Communications Corp., said in March that its software will be
used in Cable & Wireless Plc's cable TV boxes.

NCI, Microsoft Corp., Sun Microsystems Inc. and other
technology companies have been competing to provide components
for digital set-top boxes. Using the new devices, consumers will
be able to access the Internet and receive data and interactive
TV programming over high-speed cable links to their homes.
''We'll announce a huge deal in the United States coming
up,'' Ellison said, speaking at Oracle's Java strategy day. He
didn't offer specific details, and an NCI spokesman declined to
comment.

Microsoft said in January that it would supply the operating
system software for about 5 million of Tele-Communications Inc.'s
set-top boxes. Sun Microsystems also signed an agreement to
provide software for some of TCI's boxes.
