LT, volume has dropped off. The reason isn't clear.

The price has been very stable as compared to past history. Typically Dell would drop off 30% in between earnings reports then come back to new highs. With the stock price stable, shareholders tend to hold and wait it out. So shareholders aren't selling as fast.

Buyers are used to buying on the dip on Dell. The only problem is the dip has been more shallow thus creating less of an opportunity for buyers to find Dell discounted. The effect of this is to reduce volume. Also, after the INTC/CPQ warnings buyers are more to the sidelines waiting to see if Dell is going to deliver when others couldn't. So buyers aren't buying as fast.

If DELL performs well on this earnings cycle, the INTC/CPQ issue becomes moot. I would expect Dell volume to pick up but still not as high as in the past.

Of course this would all change again if Dell were to expand their share buyback program.

Maybe the fast money moved into the internet stocks. Note that the drop in Dell mirrored the rise in Infoseek at the end of the day yesterday. The money has to come from somewhere, and it won't come from people holding paper and tractor stocks -- it will come from people who know a bit about technology and aren't afraid to ride volitile tech stocks. Dell owners fit the bill.

IMHO, the Dell rise will continue.

Lucretius, sideways?!?!?! I'll take DELL's y-t-d gain anytime! Moderating volume is not a bad sign when the price is "sideways". I see it as clear consolidation, ready to take-off in the face of the May earnings report. It's not too late to get in on it.
