The Pandora-project is moving ahead. A pipeline decision is expected this week!

SYDNEY May 4: Shares in New South Wales-based gas distributor AGL Ltd lifted almost five per cent on Friday with commentators attributing the move to a combination of bargain hunting and imminent news of a contract in Papua New Guinea. AGL shares closed up 54 cents, or 4.7 per cent, at A$11.95 on turnover of 2.28 million.

The market is waiting for Chevron Asiatic to decide who will build, own and operate a gas pipeline from PNG to Queensland, which would run more than 2,000 kilometres. AGL bid for the contract with Malaysian enterprise Petronas, and is competing with North American consortium Nova/Williams. A decision is expected this week.

"I think it can only be assumed that the pipeline deal will go ahead," one broker said. "I think the market's just realised and people are wanting to get set ahead of any announcement."

One analyst said it was possible that the decision may have been leaked.
