Part of that is the 66 Mhz bus, the new 100 Mhz bus will stop this along with the faster cache mmeory speeds.
They call it bus strangulation, and all us Wintel fanatics over clock the things to get the bus faster. Currently you can push it to around 87 Mhz reliably with some boards. 100 Mhz boards are out now, but are flakey. In 2 months you will be able to puch them to 120 or so.

Intel is in trouble unless they can transition to Merced quickly at a very competitive price point.

I read something odd in a NYT article recently, which quoted an Intel spokesperson as saying that they didn't expect the Merced to enter the consumer market for several years. Has anyone seen anything that confirms that? If true, that means it'll be Pentium versus G3/G4+ in the consumer space for a long time to come, and Apple will be able to boast steadily increasing price/performance gains over the next few years. It seems like Apple's early move to RISC is finally paying off.
