"The ancient history of Karnataka is lost in the mists of age-old legends and epics. However, the recorded history brings Chandragupta Maurya, a contemporary of Alexander the Great, Who spent his last years in the 3rd century BC at Sravana-belagola, 96 Km from Mysore. His grandson, Ashoka the Great of the Maurya dynasty ruled over a large part of Karnataka and raised edicts carved on stone pillars in Raichur and Chitradurga. By the 1st century BC, the Satavahanas succeeded the Mauryas, and built Buddhist stupas and viharas on a large scale. Around the 4th century, the Ganga dynasty came to power which erected the massive Lord Gomateswara's statue and the Jain temple at Sravanabelagola. The sixth century unhered in the Chalukya of Badami, who evolved the Chalukya style of architecture and built cave temple. After the decline of the 8th century, the golden age of the Rashtrakutas set in. The Rashtrakuta Kings encouraged poetry and the fine art."
