Next-generation technologies were the subject of two notable announcements during the quarter. In February, SGS-THOMSON announced a joint development with Mitsubishi to develop a new generation of Flash memory products, starting with multi-level 64Mbit, which will include the advantages of both DINOR and NOR architectures as well as associated advanced processes from 0.20 through 0.18 micron. In March the Company announced the completion of the first phase of the development of HCMOS-8, the next generation 0.15 micron CMOS process, at Crolles, near Grenoble.

Book-to-bill = 0.80

Three-month average shipments decreased in March 1998 to $1.3 billion. The figure is one percent below the Feb. 1998 level, yet it is 27 percent above the March 1997 level. Three-month average bookings also decreased in March 1998 to $1.1 billion. The bookings figure is 12 percent below the Feb. 1998 level, and eight percent below the March 1997 level.

"SEMI's March data indicates the continued downward trend of worldwide equipment orders, with total orders for March down by essentially the same amount as from January to February," said Dick Greene, principal analyst with SEMI.

"To put some things in positive perspective, the $1,322 million level of shipments is 27 percent higher than the March 1997 level. These results are in line with SEMI's latest Buyers Survey of semiconductor device manufacturers, completed in March, which projects that equipment orders will be down about 12 percent this year."
