Albert,

What would happen when only a few Intel janitors take early retirement and the balance came from R&D staffs and designers? I know asking for volunteers does not work. An ex-IBMer left and join AMD to and became a key VP (chief scientist) and startup the AMD's R&D center. People have no talents will stay. Those that have will take the fat bonus money and well deserved long vacations before going back to work.

<to be correct, you have to check this reference to "attrition". You will find that the reference was to most (whatever that means) of 3000 and what about those who do not qualify as most ?>

My point exactly. As for the remaining few(?) I guess you're right, they will get layed off. At least that's the way I read it. The expectation is though that it will be much closer to 300 people than to 3000, as reported in the headlines.
