Big Pharma Report- 4/18/98

Week
Despite a record breaking market, Big Pharma (-0.6%) rotated off its April high as compared to gains for the Dow (+1.9%), S&P (+1.1%) and the NAStie (+2.5%). April's STWs LLY (+6.9%) and PFE (+6.0%) paced the sector while SBH (-7.9%) and MRK (-4.7%) disappointed in pipeline and earnings reports.

Only PFE set an an-time high this week based on early Viagra reports. The actual reported high varies depending on the quote service from 105.38 to 106.5.

WLA made a strong recovery on Friday (+6 9/16) as a result of reports of Lipitor's increased market share. Actually old news...check out last week's Big Pharma Report.

APRIL 1998

Big Pharma is flat (+0.7%) as compared to the Dow (+4.2%), S&P (+1.9%), and the NASTIE (+1.7%). This year's only Pharma decliner LLY is making a big comeback in April (+14.7%) followed by PFE (+5.5%). April is historically PFE's second best month ...averaging +7.0% since 1993.

MRK missed the Consensus by a penny and resulted in the 6.1% monthly decline.

YTD 1998
Big Pharma (+20.3%) is very healthy ...ahead of the Dow (+15.9%), the S&P (+15.7%), and the NASTie (+18.9%).

In a great race for #1, WLA (+41.2%) edged PFE (+41.1%) by only 1/8th of a point! Strange but true....PFE has still never led a Big Pharma Scoreboard.

"Da Cup" (-1.8%) is moving to the black.
