Tom: Earnings plays.. several days ahead is when I start watching them. I am usually able to make 1 or 2 trades until the actual date. EGRP was good for 2 trades, HBOC was good for 2 as well. Even though these two ultimately did not have gains day after the report date.

That is the reason I give you the earnings plays as soon as I can get them off. Especially in a down day like today, with earnings plays you can separate the 'value' plays from the sheer momentum plays like internet plays. I am going to be getting some of the Monday's plays already tomorrow (i.e. from the list I posted and some others). Of course the other thing you should follow in 'earnings plays' is for the most part they are plays for the 1-3 point pop and then they are sold. I did not want to sell AVEI but when I saw it dropping the first hour or so, I had to get out to preserve the good gains of yesterday.

AVEI will still be a play on earnings because they are going to report today and it's PROJECTED to triple digit gains. I put in a buy order near the close anticipating a further upswing. That is why you have to establish when you buy a stock like that what is your goal? What is your mental stop to preserve profits? Is it enough to scalp it for 1 1/2 plus points? Or do you want it for an intermediate hold. For your information, institutions base their buys primarily on stocks that have 'beaten the street' That is the premise behind my trading philosophy on "marketgems". So if your stock beats the street by more than a few cents.. it may retreat for a day or so of profit taking, but rest assured it will be back for gain after gain. Examples of these kind of stocks are: (SEBL,SAVLY,SANM,PWAV,AEOS, TKLC, URI, TXN, and others).

But staying in after the initial 2-3 point gain is your call and your judgment. I took a look forward today especially because on this down day I wanted to get a head start on the companies that stayed in the green. The fact that these companies turned out in my scans makes them very appealing.. More on those and others later tonight.
