Interesting link - I had read the article but didn't remember Kurlak specifically. It is interesting to note that Kurlak was a banker in New Jersey when he joined Merril in 1978 at the age of 30.

I don't know of any big banks in New Jersey. Where could he have worked - Newark, Trenton, Jersey City, Princeton, Secaucus? Where ever it was, it couldn't have been very big in either size or prestige.

It was also interesting to note that he was not part of the program that Donald Regan brought in to upgrade analyst positions. This somehow tells me that his streak of good luck is not just a recent phenomenon.
