The battle lines are drawn: The Value Players vs. the Momentum and Growth Players; but above all, Clinton and Congress vs. the tobacco industry. As the drama unfolds, all the players will position themselves and place their bets. Shareholders will suffer as long as tough talk emanates from Washington and Uncertainty and Risk Rule! The most recent Florida verdict was good for the tobacco industry. For all intensive purposes, it is now politically feasible for Congress to give the Industry strong liability protection for class action lawsuits without appearing soft. But there is still a tremendous amount of fear and trepidation amongst investors and traders. The Minnesota case will define the parameters of the settlement. Your guess is as good as mine. MO expects to win outright. Stay tuned. What type of legislation, if any, will be drafted by Congress? The Uncertainty here will keep the shares flat and under pressure for the short term, till Congress comes back from Easter recess. The Street wants a decent settlement here real bad.
