ERICSSON D-AMPS IS-136 WIRELESS OFFICE SYSTEM MAKES ONE PHONE,
ONE NUMBER A REALITY

Ericsson Inc. has introduced its premise-based D-AMPS IS-136 (TDMA)
Wireless Office System that will offer enterprises a one-phone,
one-number system that can be used anywhere inside or outside the
office.

The announcement was made at the Universal Wireless Communications
Consortium (UWCC) Global Summit in Vancouver. This product operates
on both the 850 MHz and 1900 MHz license frequencies. With the
introduction of this product, the days of phone tag, endless voice
mail messages and keeping up with a variety of communications
devices could soon be numbered.

The feature-rich system is designed to capitalize on the unique
advantages of the D-AMPS IS-136 (TDMA) standard and is being
marketed together with wireless operators. General availability in
North America is scheduled for November. Ericsson has also announced
a joint marketing agreement with AT&T Wireless Services to offer the
system to its business customers. Other agreements are expected to
be announced this year.

Ericsson's Wireless Office System is a fully digital mobile
communications system that provides a mobile extension of the wired
PBX. The system's unique radio network provides in-building mobility
using a single digital mobile phone. Outside, the same phone
automatically roams to any IS-136 wireless network. All major PBX
features, including PBX voice mail, are part of the system.

"Wireless Office Systems will allow operators to attract more
business users and make better use of their investments in the macro
network," said Rune V. Johanson, Vice President of Ericsson Wireless
Office Services. "Enterprises will achieve improved productivity,
increased employee satisfaction and reduced costs. The system's
unique radio architecture and advanced PBX features are the result
of pooling competencies from Ericsson business communications and
wireless communications areas. It is a private enterprise system
that will operate as an integral part of the any vendor's D-AMPS
IS-136 network via an IS-41 link. We believe that both wireless
operators and enterprises will be quick to understand the benefits
of the Ericsson system."

The Ericsson system's virtual single cell radio network architecture
performs with multiple cell capacity. According to Mikael Nilsson,
Product Manager for Ericsson Wireless Office Services.

"What sets the Ericsson system apart from similar systems is our
radio network architecture. Our product is uniquely designed to
ensure excellent voice quality throughout the wireless office.
Building on the basic soft-handoff patent that Ericsson received in
the mid-1980s, this product uses a technique called macro diversity
to enhance voice quality without sacrificing the capacity benefits
of TDMA. The radio network automatically allocates frequencies from
the public network for use in building and the dynamic channel
selection feature always finds the best channel. So there's never an
in-building capacity issue."

The Ericsson Wireless Office System is the ultimate solution for
enterprises that require mobility inside and outside the office. "We
believe the simplicity of using one phone and keeping track of only
one number for business purposes will be very attractive and highly
appreciated," Johanson added.

There are approximately 80 million subscribers using D-AMPS/AMPS
networks worldwide. D-AMPS was the first technology to be
commercially available as a dual-band (800/1900 MHz) and dual-mode
(analog/digital) technology. More than 9 million subscribers are
already using D-AMPS digital services.

Ericsson's 100,000 employees are active in more than 130 countries.
Their combined expertise in fixed and mobile networks, mobile phones
and infocom systems makes Ericsson the world-leading supplier in
telecommunications.
