Sun Microsystems Awarded SMC Contract by USPS
WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 16, 1998--Sun Microsystems, Inc., announced today that its wholly owned subsidiary, Sun Microsystems Federal, Inc., has been awarded the Scaleable Midrange Computers (SMC) contract by the United States Postal Service (USPS). The maximum award value over the life of the contract is $500 million.
The five-year contract will provide the USPS with a full range of products, services and support deployment inclusive of the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. Sun will provide a state-of-the-art, end-to-end solution including the Sun(TM) Enterprise(TM) line of scalable high-performance servers, the Solaris(TM) operating environment and Java(TM) technology. In addition, Sun will also provide installation, maintenance, programing, support personnel and training.

The USPS plans to use Sun to support a variety of applications such as file servers, application servers, database servers, security servers, and computer servers.
