Janice, actually the Shroud is going to be on display for eight weeks, starting this coming Saturday, at the Cathedral of Turin. The first couple of paragraphs of the Time article are about that:

I would really love to see it. I think the standard Vatican position on relics is that they are special because people love to see them, and feel very spiritual around them, whether they are authentic or not. I feel something really powerful and mystical when I look at pictures of the Shroud, particularly the photographic negative, and I am neither Christian or Catholic. I certainly cannot understand the source of my feelings, and am turning into a blithering idiot about the subject, for reasons that escape me entirely, obviously.
