Dow Jones News April 16, 1998 - Low-End Workstations Strong In 3Q

The company also said it saw strong sales of its new low-end Ultra 5 and Ultra 10 workstations, its workgroup servers that compete against Windows NT products and its high-end servers, such as the 6000 and 10000 models. Shipments of the high-end Starfire also rose. In after-market trading, Sun shares rose to 41 11/16 from a close of 40 3/4.

Web Servers

The market for servers to host Web applications or provide access to the Internet is booming. As a result, the battle is on to sell those servers to U.S. businesses. Sun and Compaq have emerged as the early leaders in this space. This is especially big news for Sun, as many of these customers have not purchased Sun servers before.
