Neither Sharon nor Dorothy were thought to be great actresses, but both had star-presence. I don't think Sharon was in more than one or two movies, and Dorothy was in just the one.

Sharon had the advantage of being married to Roman Polanski at the time of her death. That alone would have afforded her automatic entry as an Oscar contender. Of course, she may have taken another path and settled into domestic bliss as the proverbial dutiful wife and mother. But this we will never know.
