All... anyone know if this is tied to Japan's cdmaOne launch?

April 17, 1998 (TOKYO) -- NTT Mobile Communications Networks Inc. (NTT
DoCoMo) unveiled a plan to introduce at the end of this year mobile telephone
terminals equipped with a Web browser.
The company will provide a content-oriented service exclusively for mobile phone
customers.

The service will enable users to view weather forecasts and news displayed on a
black and white liquid crystal display (LCD) screen measuring about 3cm x 3cm.
For this service, NTT DoCoMo will take the leading role in developing content in
text format suitable for the display screen size. It expects initially to have about
20-30 content providers.

A description language called Compact HTML, developed by Access Co., Ltd.,
will be used to describe the content. Compact HTML is a subset of hyper text
markup language (HTML) used on the World Wide Web. In order to reduce the
amount of data to be transmitted, such functions as JPEG images and table
displays, as well as frame displays, are excluded.

At the same time, NTT DoCoMo is expected to launch a packet switching service
at a transmission speed of 9.6 kbps. A proprietary protocol is likely to be
developed.

NTT's current data communication service at 9.6 kbps uses the circuit switching
type.
