Insightful feedback from a guy in the trenches who knows what it takes to support hardware re:Dell servers without adequate support. BTW, how do I copy the thread location without typing the whole thing out? I had to do a cut and past to get below to this thread.

"I can only speak from my experiences, but in providing large systems, ($25m) in heavy industry, we found that DEC provided significant help when it came to efficient configurations, implementation software, both application and standard, as well as field service support. It is true that we were the experts for the application but we couldn't always find the best configuration of hardware or distribution of software for each specific job. As you observed, it would require expertise in both the engineering/control aspects as well as the latest level 2 or 3 hardware and software for an ideal situation but that's not always possible where systems get increasingly complex. That's why I wished Dell had bought DEC. It's only from personal experience and again, JMHO but I see a future where these skills and expertise are increasingly important."
