Generally, the end user specified DEC VAX for their higher level (2 and up) hardware but we still did the application programming. We did not encounter problems with the basic system installation or trouble shooting; however, when we wanted to expand to even bigger and more complex solutions, DEC was able to play a larger role. In other words, more complex and extensive networking to higher level systems required substantially more complex and extensive engineering. Therefore, consultation expertise in integrating these more complicated control/networked philosophies became increasingly beneficial for suppliers of minicomputers. Hope that explains where I view the advantages.
