Mordovia, autonomous republic in west
central Russia, located between Moscow and
the Volga River. Mordovia covers an area
of 26,200 sq km (10,100 sq mi). Saransk is
the administrative center. The northwestern
part of the republic is marked by the
Oka-Don Plain, and the southeastern section
forms part of the Volga Upland.
Slow-moving rivers, such as the Moksha
and its tributaries, meander through
Mordovia. Forests cover about one-quarter
of the land.

Mordovia has a population of 962,700
(1994 estimate). Russians represent about
61 percent of the republic's population;
Mordvins constitute about 32 percent. The
Mordvin speak two distinct languages of the
Finno-Ugric language group, Moksha and
Erzya. The republic's primary religion is
Orthodox Christianity. Its economy is
largely agricultural. Mordovia is
administered by an elected council of
ministers and an elected legislative
assembly. One of the 21 Russian republics,
it has three seats in the Russian Federal
Assembly.
