Jeff,

Re: mainframe days. That hasn't happened here and isn't likley to. Too many folks with PCs on their desks here are too literate to allow it to happen (power to the people and all that ;-) ).

Re: Home problem. No need to get depressed, if you are out past the limits of current wires you may be even luckier. WIth the rapid rate of Cell phone deployment (specifically PCS) and the third generation PCS products currently under development (a friend of mine here is working on one) is aimed squarely at high-speed digital net-access. And I'm talking BIG pipes!.. Wireless is so much cheaper to deploy (especially if it functions as Net access and cell phone).. you may have the best comming.

Re: responsiveness. Your problem isn't the actual congestion on the net, but rather (most likely) an overworked DNS server. If you are talking about the same responsiveness I am. For most things my home access is (first response on click) is better than at work, due to the fact that we only have 2 main dns servers here and they are overworked. My proxy helps that out a bit though. At home I have virtually no delay in looking up the web site and then the wait is occasionally for a slow server from say france or germany (who is by far the worst country in the world to connect to for some reason).
