FIRST QUARTER MUTUAL FUND OWNERSHIP CHANGES

The Morningstar Stock Tools reports for the end of March versus last December verarify a number of major changes occurred in the ownership of IMRS by mutual funds. In the first quarter the ownersip by mutual funds increased from 22 .0% to 26.%. This 4.0% increase is accounted for by changes in ownership by just 6 funds 5 of which added to previous positions. The largest increase among previous owners was the PBHG Growthfund which increased their ownership to 4.3% of all shares from 3.1%.The Van Kempen Emerging Growth Fund bought for the first time and now owns 1.5% of IMRS shares. The number of funds owning IMRS increased from 28 to 38 funds. The top 6 funds own 17.7% out of the 26% owned by funds. Therefore the remaining 32 funds have really only a toe in the water position. If the earnings are as strong as we expect it is very likely an important fraction of the 10 firms buying IMRS for the first time will add to their positions. IN a previous post I stated that IMRS is an ideal stock for Momemtum funds. The large purchases by PBHG , perhaps the best known momemtum fund validates my conclusion. During the last quarter 1 5 star rated fund(MFS EMERGING GROWTH) bought IMRS and 2 new 3 star funds. They are now among the 10 funds with the largest ownership. With the exception OF Lord Abbett Developing Growth, no fund has more than 1% of its assets in IMRS. AS of 1/31/98 Lord Abbett had 500,000 shares of IMRS.The momentum players are willing to pay for financial performance. I believe that if IMRS can again sequentially grow EPS by 2.5 cents as it has in the previous 2 quarters that their will be intense price competition among Mutual funds seeking to add to their positions. At the last conference call Satish Sanaan stated he would sell 1% of his shares per quarter.I sure hopes he follows through as it will reduce unsustainable upward price spikes that come home to haunt you later.
