Based on the spunky press release, I would think it's reasonable to assume that the upcoming earnings announcement will be solid, if not better. In my estimation, if Vantive were feeling vulnerable to competitive criticism, it would not shoot this accross Seibel's bow.

While I will wait for the numbers before adding to my position, sometimes the subtle dynamics embedded in this type of press release can be as telling as anything.

We'll see.

I have felt for the last couple of days that the recent price fade in Vantive was a buy opportunity. I generally don't trust the price moves for the week or so preceding options expiration.

cheers. Rick.

ooops, i didn't see the press release. very amusing! Zap!!!

I dipped my toes in today at 33 15/16. I must say the release was quite funny, and as indicated in another note may be an indication of a solid quarter.

This is rapidly turning into ORCL / IFMX part II. Tom wouldn't even answer a question specifically about VNTV on the Q4 call and now he has been reduced to disclosing merger negotiation rumors publicly - for what reason I have no idea. Merger ideas are thrown around by bankers all the time. Some guy one year out of biz school at
DMG probably thought to pitch a VNTV/SEBL deal and Siebel allowed them in the door to do the PowerPoint presentation. Who knows but Tom's discussion of the topic certainly wasn't a positive step for Siebel Systems. What a jerk. Tom's ego is out of control and his hubris will come back to haunt him at some point.

Tom has spent the last few years competing against a bunch of underpowered, second rate companies and feels his company should now be compared only to SAP and Peoplesoft - not little old Vantive, who has survived a dogfight with Scopus and Clarify. Tom is in for a war and is clearly reluctant to accept this. He must be threatened by VNTV to attack them in the way he did the other day. The Scopus buy has totally bailed SEBL out of underspending on R&D the last few years. Tom talks about how efficient his R&D people are but they certainly weren't efficient enough to get in the door in a support deal.

Vantive might be a tier behind SEBL in SFA but "Vantive looks forward to discussing with investors and analysts the current competitive landscape in the front office automation software market, and specifically the success of the Vantive Sales product, during its regularly scheduled call announcing quarterly earnings on April 29, 1998."

SFA sounds like it is doing fine. VNTV is clearly #1 in Field Sales and Customer Support and #2 in SFA. This ain't a bad place to be.
