Good point Sam. Sam, I am assuming you are alluding to the Sikh militants who have been in the headlines lately? Let me try to explain it as I know it. First of all the origin of Sikh religion has something to do with militancy as they are also considered a warrior people besides being devoutly religious. As such even now they are allowed to carry their swords and dagger in Punjab. There is also a separate Sikh regiment in the Indian armed forces, the government thus recognizing their valor and courage as brave warrior people. The Sikhs have successfully fended off the many invaders over the centuries, particularly the Central Asians. I was told the recent militancy among a minority of the Sikhs was instigated by Sikhs living abroad some of whom have never visited India and are alien to the culture of India though they are devout Sikhs.Particular among these instigators are 'foreign' Sikhs who have migrated to the UK,Canada, and USA.Their main bone of contention is that India government has been neglecting the state of Punjab and exploiting their lot for the betterment of the rest of the country. These overseas Sikhs have been successful in instilling this feeling among the poor, uneducated and rural Sikhs in Punjab and demanding to cede from the Indian union. For a few years they have been somewhat successful in orchestrating terrorist activities in India, while sitting in their comfortable homes in the West and bank-rolling and masterminding the operation. They have miserably failed in their objective as they could only muster enough support from a minority of the people as most of the Sikhs living in Punjab, abroad and elsewhere in India have nothing to do with these people. Like other religious nuts and fundamentalists, they however managed to create a bad name for the Sikhs in general and made their life a bit unpleasant for a time in India. Majority of the Sikhs are law abiding, hard working, industrious, friendly, regligious and above all brave people with a beautiful culture and heritage. Reminds me of when I was a 'starving student' in the U.S back in the 70s.I went to get a summer job in New York during one summer and my friends and I used to go to the local 'Gurudwara' [Sikh temple] during weekend 'cos we could get a nice lunch for free, what I can tell-ya we didn't have much money then and mind you we were of all various religious persuasions and they don't ask you which religion you belong to or anything.<gg> So if any of 'yous' live in New York city and like to have an exquisite free meal, now you know where to get it,right.<VBG> I can assure you that you will be safe too. As for beautiful places of worship and monuments, you probably are right in that it may not be feasible to have one built these days as we modern folks have different priorities in life, neverthless I am glad we have them. Now as for the question, whether to sacrifice a lot for the sake of 'beauty',I think it is a philosophical question and I leave that to the philosophers among us. [ps: I am sorry for the lengthy reply]
