Contest

Sounds good to me . My picks if every one likes the contest are

Halliburton HAL short. because I think they are going to miss their numbers because of costs associated with the DI merger and I think there is something screwy up with the earnings being moved so many times.

Long NOI because I read yesterday that they were the second best oil service stock last year returning over 80% on shareholder equity. I don't know if that's accurate but someone said it in a Wall Street Journal special edition on the 1000 hottest stocks of 1997 and I have also played this one profitably in the past.

Later,
Richard

RIG COUNT April 17 - 23, 1998
i'm not playing the contest this week because every stock in this sector should go down 30 or 40%

Offshore rig counts unchanged; fleet to grow

HOUSTON: Worldwide offshore rig counts are unchanged from last week, according to Offshore Data Services
weekly mobile offshore rig count. Worldwide rig utilization remains strong despite some concerns in the offshore
oil and gas industry about soft oil prices.

In the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, fleet size increased by one to 176 with the movement of a shallow water rig into the
region from South America. However, the contracted rig count remained unchanged at 169. The movement of
the one rig into the area caused a slight decline in Gulf of Mexico rig utilization, which now stands at 96.0 percent.

In European waters, including the North Sea and Mediterranean Sea, 106 mobile offshore drilling rigs are under
contract this week. Fleet size is unchanged at 110 rigs; fleet utilization is 96.4 percent.

Worldwide, 584 of 609 mobile offshore drilling rigs are under contract. Worldwide offshore rig fleet utilization is
95.9 percent. Of the 25 rigs without contracts, only three are reported by their owners as being immediately
available for work. Sixteen are in shipyards for upgrades, maintenance and/or repairs and the remainder are not
actively marketed for work.

Sixty-one mobile offshore drilling rigs are under construction or on order worldwide; 42 of these new rigs are
designed to work in water depths exceeding 800 meters. These sixty new rigs will be joining the offshore drilling
fleet over the next 30 months: 16 are scheduled for delivery in 1998; 30 are scheduled for delivery in 1999; and
14 are scheduled for delivery in 2000.

***Contest Picks. NEW! The Karma Index***

Thank God, I -- or rather, Telescan's Macro*World Price Forecasts -- lost the last contest thunderously. Imagine predicting that the internet stocks were due for a major correction! Anyway, Telescan's "mathematical formula" has covered itself with shame.

Time now for my -- ahem! ahem! -- ALL-NEW proprietary model: The KARMA INDEX.

It is well known, of course, that some people have "good karma" and some have "bad karma." The same thing is true of STOCKS. Good/bad karma has nothing to do with a stock's present virtues, but everything to do with its virtues in a past existence, which carry over in an incomprehensible way into the present.

There were a lot of candidates for top karma status, but just to be different I have chosen Newpark Resources.

Thus:

LONG: NR.

There are plenty of candidates for "bad karma," including those I own myself (ESV,TDW). However, I don't wish to jinx myself by nominating my own stocks to win in the "short" category. Besides, TDW may reverse its fortunes by offering up its usual positive earning surprise next week. That leaves, however, plenty of candidates, including MIND -- which is NOT on the Yahoo list. I thought of nominating TBDI, but that poor stock is SO undervalued that somebody may just figure it out. So, here goes:

SHORT: DALY

If I don't win this contest, I shall clearly have to revise/update/modify my KARMA INDEX. Stay tuned.
