APRIL 2 The current business environment is one of "enhancing shareholder value." We believe another definition of enhancing shareholder value is "to make profits as high as possible." Therefore, many tools of the trade used to enhance value result in a deterioration of quality in earnings. To name a few, some of our recent studies have targeted excessive use of employee stock options, off-balance sheet financing, stock buyback programs, and merger activity permitting writeoffs and restated earnings.
