YEAR 2000 FIX FOR IRS TO COST ALMOST $1 BILLIONApril 17, 1998ÿTo fix the millennium bug in just the IRS, the IRS commissioner said Monday that the government agency will spend almost $1 billion. He said that if the problem wasn't fixed in time it could adversely affect the IRS' ability to process tax returns after 1999. He said, "We want to get that all done by January 1999 prior to the next tax season. That gives us the remainder of 1999 to do a very comprehensive test. We're focusing every day on trying to make that happen."
