Kulicke & Soffa reported flat earnings which I think is prety goood conciddering. How's about that enlash? :-) They did report lower bookings. The stock traded mostly flat. Kulicke & Soffa Industries reported Friday that revenues slipped slightly to $120.1 million in its second fiscal quarter, ended March 31, compared with $121.5 million in the same period a year ago. K&S also said its net income was better than expected, coming in at $9.2 million, only slightly lower than the $9.3 million recorded in the same quarter last year. Refelecting weakness in chip-assembly equipment markets because of the Asian financial crisis and price erosion in dynamic RAM devices, the Willow Grove, Pa., company said its bookings were 33 percent lower in the quarter compared with a year ago. Earlier, the company had announced $28.3 million in equipment orders had been canceled, lowering the quarter's bookings to $93 million compared with $138 million in 1997. K&S' ending backlog for the quarter was $104 million compared with $110 million at the end of the second quarter of fiscal 1997, according to the equipment supplier. "The March quarter earnings exceeded our expectations," said C. Scott Kulicke, chairman and CEO officer of K&S. "The combination of lower operating expenses and the revision to the expected FY98 [fiscal year 1998] effective tax rate produced net income better than our previous plans. However, we anticipate near-term demand to be below that of recent quarters, and are taking the necessary actions to bring expenses in line with this expected reduction in shipments." --------- So how important is Cymer's laser??
