RB, << I did not buy stock in an effort to avoid being assigned 4000 shares. << That shows the difficulty posed by a close near the strike. Other players might have been inclined to SHORT 4000 shares if they thought they would be assigned 4000 shares thereby evening up their position. But, of course, they wouldn't know until after the close whether they would be assigned or not. Therefore they couldn't be quite sure whether to buy or sell or do nothing at the close. At best, their decision would be an educated guess. And its' correctness will not be validated until Monday.
Suppose there is a press release this weekend. Will it be favorable? Or unfavorable? Can you imagine the pressure on the decision making? It is my belief that such a situation is one of the most difficult a player has to face in options. A skilled player knows how to act in every other situation but this one, because he knows what he has to deal with. Here he's just guessing.
