Teledesic will be a global data network, whereas Iridium is mainly for voice, as I understand it. A direct competitor to Iriduim is the GlobalStar system, which is a consortium of Qualcomm and several other co's. One of the main differences is that Iridium satellites can actually do switching, whereas the GlobalStar system relies on ground stations to do their switching for them.
