Michael --

I don't really know what to make of GTE's deployment. Since I was expecting CSCO to edge its way into that space, I have to think they can't get a competitive product out fast enough. This is good for anyone who thought they were a threat. Of course I can't believe Orckit will be the only vendor for GTE --- based on many conversations I've had in the industry --- unless a major telecom equip maker takes them out. What are the chances of this happening? Skuttle-butt says it probably wouldn't be a Japanese company because the cultures are so different, so who would it be?

This is purely hypothesis but worth a lazy week-end debate.

You're right about HKT being a harbinger, but what's interesting is how easily they embrace VOD which we all know didn't fly when BellSouth did its original trials. I think it was a cost issue and subscribers simply weren't willing to pay if they could rent videos at the local shop. Once we get highspeed connections to our PCs I suspect our mentality will change and we'll expect the same ease of access with our TVs.

I'm planning a trip to Ontario, Canada, this summer and will visit the distributors around Calgary who sell ADSL service and maybe get a feel for how well it's being accepted. This is actually a long-postponed trip to visit a second cousin on a wheat ranch, so don't think I've lost my marbles. I just figure if I'm in the area, I'll stop and ask a few questions. "Say, can you tell me how folks are liking their highspeed connections?"

Check out Monday's IBD interview with Howard Chaney from Cisco. More general comments on highspeed access --- part of his ComDex-Chicago keynote address next week. (Posted on the TI thread.)

Later --
