I agree with your analysis regarding the need to standardize. The classic example is Beta vs VHS. Beta was clearly better but the market went with VHS. Right now 3dfx is has the momentum and will be difficult if not impossible to stop. Just as with Microsoft, game developers will find it most profitable to allocate their limited resources to the leader 3dfx. Xmas 98 selling season is only 6 months away (starting in Nov) and there will be only one winner.
