Michael....MSFT knows better than anyone that speed is important wrt the net...That is why they Snapped up HOTMAIL..bang deal done...BRAND Awareness and TRAFFIC are the KEY points...I have many ISP accounts and MSN is the least efficient of them all MSFT is in that field but are they gunning to beat mkt share from AOL...No they know it will be impossible to take that BRAND name away...these engines are not software that you sell ...they are services that you provide and MSFT is great at selling..THE BEST ...But they are Rich enough to be the Best At Buying...ie HOTMAIL

>>If you are really looking into the future, maybe you should really look at what the internet might become. The two main players will be AOL and Microsoft not a little company with no technology and no ability to buy the technology to become a real player.

Microsoft isn't the same company it was six months ago. There is no way they will be permitted to dominate the Internet directory or gateway space. No way. Times have changed. They blew it by the way they competed with Netscape. After his hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, didn't Bill G agree to drop the preferred-provider channels out of IE? That's going backwards.

After all the hundreds of millions Microsoft has poured into content during the past two years Microsoft has four great content sites: Investor, Carpoint, Expedia, and MSNBC. They're very well done, but they're no Yahoo, and they don't make money.

What's this line about "little company with no technology and no ability to buy the technology to become a real player?" Yahoo has plenty of money, throws off plenty of cash, Internet technology is open, and Yahoo is undisputedly (apparently except from you) a real player...globally.

Michael,

Wait a minute. With a $5-6 B market cap, they can use their
own stock for acquisitions. I think the interesting question
is: what/who would it makes sense for them to try to buy?
