Hal, I wouldn't even try to get into Emile's mind. All I can say is that in my opinion, religious beliefs can be positive or negative in their impact on humanity, and that quoting the Bible reveals nothing either way about the person who is doing it.

I also think that because the Jews did not accept Jesus instead of Abraham as their father, a lot of hate was created in the first few centuries which was reflected in the Bible, as the Christians became more and more angry and finally decided to go off on their own. I think this is why a Holocaust was possible, even though Hitler was plenty evil himself. He took advantage of a lot of prejudice against the Jews that had been handed down from one generation of Christians to the next over almost two thousand years, and so they could justify looking the other way while their neighbors disappeared. Of course, not all Christians did this, but enough did so that evil prevailed in Europe.

The Christian right in America has a political as well as a religious agenda. The KKK and the other white supremacists, especially the militia movement, are all Christians!! Isn't that hard to believe?? So when someone says he is a Christian, it means nothing until you can see into his heart. Likewise, people who are not Christians should be judged on the good works they do, and their love and kindness, not on their absence of traditional religious beliefs.

It is said that people who are filled with hate feel powerless and out of control. Certainly, the small farmers and other rural whites without advanced educations have been the most threatened by the rapid modernization of America, and the globalization of our economy, and they are hurting. Sometimes that causes a backlash, particularly against the groups they compete with the most economically. In the South, that is blacks, but they lash out against Jews and homosexuals and other minority groups as well.

One thing I am sure of is that intolerance and hatred are taught to small children by their parents. If we could somehow intervene there, the world would be a much better and happier place in one generation, wouldn't it?
