Nigel, it seems that the loss was all in the 4th quarter of 1997. The rest of the quarters, they were profitable. Take a look at their S-1 on Edgar (www.freeedgar.com). They have some quarterly financials in the S-1.

It seems that most of the loss was due to a huge increase in SG&A, which they explained as a rapid expansion of sales personnel and other marketing costs. In addition, they had quite a bit of professional and legal costs associated with the IPO.

BRCM was profitable in Q1 98 and should continue to be profitable from here on out. Good luck!
