Has anyone else seen this article? I just got the headline, and am too cheap to get the whole thing.

Orders For Japanese Chip-Making Equipment Drop 35% In Feb
TOKYO --Orders for Japanese semiconductor-manufacturing equipment, including export orders, totaled 67.5 billion yen in February, a year-on-year decline of 35.1%, figures released Wednesday by the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan show.

So does this represent a failure to ante up in the high-stakes poker game while the other players proceed with business as usual,
or is it just a retrenchment for a hand or two? Will a significant number of the chip makers continue to use what equipment they have on hand until it is clear that they can make a profit, and only buy new stuff at that point? The traditional wisdom on the thread is these companies must invest heavily in chip making equipment or get left behind. I find it hard to believe that the Japanese would let themselves be outdated.
