Being a linux centric nerd myself and having ported several data analysis and radar imaging programs over the years from vms to convex to slowlaris to irix to hpux to linux and back mostly between linux and irix, (pause for breath) irix is the best linux clone. The hangup with linux is that we three nerds from orient R have not found a tuned math library (fft mostly ) and there is currently no decent openGL video support.
Other than that the linux os I introduced in 1996 is continuing to spread through out the company that currently rents my neurons and linux is successfully eradicating the borg computer virus.

For the weaker nerds I work with who have mental retardus syndrome, we have isolated a multiuser borg-nt-us strain that can be execution contained on a borg server and displayed X purified on our linux and linux clone (sgi) workstations.

REMEMBER, an intel processor is a terrible thing to waste on borgware.

Which is why the (SGI) MIPS roadmap extends at least that many years into the future. No coincidence.
